GRIZZLY BEAR VIEWING TOURS

Sedge Season
Prime bear viewing season in the Khutzeymateen. The bears are in full sedge feeding mode and can be found throughout the Khutzeymateen Inlet.
Mating season begins to intensify as more bears emerge throughout the entire inlet. Courtship and mating are common. Sows and cubs may also emerge as they too need the sedge and clams to replenish after the long winter fast.

Mid-Summer
As the sedge begins to die off and become less palatable for the bears, they begin to feed on berries and other vegetation. With the mating season slowing down, the sows and cubs are often more active.
Some years the pink salmon start returning to the creeks and bears fishing as early as the 3rd week in July. With the humpback whales returning to the North Coast, we will go on a whale watching tour on your trip.
Salmon Season (Fall)
_edited.jpg)
Five main creeks throughout the Khutzeymateen Inlet support returning Pink salmon, while the Khutzeymateen River is home to annual runs of Pink, Chum, and Coho salmon. Salmon begin arriving in late July and early August, drawing grizzly bears to the creeks and river to feed. As with all salmon and bear viewing destinations, viewing success depends on the strength of the annual salmon runs, as well as creek and river conditions.
This season also offers excellent opportunities to observe humpback whales, sea lions, and harbour seals. The inlet comes alive with hundreds of bald eagles, gulls, great blue herons, and a variety of other coastal birds.

Early Spring
The bears are emerging from hibernation at this time of year, feeding primarily on the early sedge throughout the inlet and digging clams.
Early courting and mating activity can be seen.
