GRIZZLY BEAR VIEWING TOURS

BOAT-BASED GRIZZLY BEAR VIEWING TOURS
Our 24 foot tour boat is designed to view bears quietly in shallow water throughout the inlet's extensive sedge flats, starting directly across from our lodge. Our covered boat ensures that you can focus on the bears rather than trying to keep your camera gear dry.

Sedge Season
This is our prime bear viewing season in the Khutzeymateen. The bears are in full sedge feeding mode and can be found throughout the Khutzeymateen Inlet.
Mating season begins to intensify as more bears emerge throughout the entire inlet. Courtship and mating are common. Sows and cubs may also emerge as they too need the sedge and clams to replenish after the long winter fast.

Mid-Summer
Summer Sedge, berries, and early salmon action.
As the sedge begins to die off and become less palatable for the bears, they begin to feed on berries and other vegetation. With the mating season slowing down the sows and cubs are often more active.
Some years the pink salmon start returning to the creeks and bears fishing as early as the 3rd week in July. With the humpback whales returning to the North Coast, we will go on a whale watching tour on your trip.
Salmon Season (Fall)

Fishing grizzlies, eagles, and peak coastal wildlife.
We are fortunate to have 5 main creeks throughout the Khutzeymateen Inlet with Pink salmon returns. Additionally, we have the main Khutzeymateen River where there is Pink, Chum and Coho salmon runs. The creeks and river start to fill with salmon in the end of July and early August.
Like all salmon and bear viewing sites, the viewing success is based on the health of the salmon runs and creek and river levels. This time of year, is also great humpback whale, sea lions, and seal viewing. The inlet also comes alive with hundreds of eagles, gulls, herons, and other waterfowl.

Early Spring
The bears are emerging from hibernation at this time of year, feeding primarily on the early sedge throughout the inlet and digging clams.
Early courting and mating activity can be seen.
