BOAT-BASED GRIZZLY BEAR VIEWING TOURS

Our 24 foot tour boat is designed to view bears quietly in shallow water throughout the inlet's extensive sedge flats, starting directly across from our lodge. Our covered boat ensures that you can focus on the bears rather than trying to keep your camera gear dry.

Sedge Season (Spring)

Bears on the beach, courtship in the estuary.

As grizzlies emerge from hibernation, they head straight for the sedge meadows and tidal flats.

This is a great time to observe grazing, clamming, and the start of mating season. Mothers with cubs also become more active.

Mid-Summer

Berries, bears, and early salmon action.

The estuary greens fade into berry season, and early salmon may begin to arrive.

Sows and cubs are active, and some bears begin fishing the creeks. Includes a humpback whale watching tour.

Salmon Season (Fall)

Fishing grizzlies, eagles, and peak coastal wildlife.

This is the most dynamic time of year in the Khutzeymateen. Bears gather at creeks and rivers to feast on pink and chum salmon.

The inlet also fills with eagles, seals, seabirds, and humpback whales, which are commonly observed in Chatham Sound.
